Weight Watchers is an international company focused on weight loss. Although they are no longer using their traditional point system and claim you don’t need to count calories, in the end, it is about calories…which is what is needed to lose weight. Their basic approach is about caloric deficit by eating lean proteins, healthy fats, complex carbs and endless fruits & veggies while focusing of high fiber foods.

If you are a fan of Empower Your Body and follow our show, you know I am a fan of that balanced, accountable approach to healthy eating. That way you LEARN how to eat properly and can apply the principles to any situation, party, or gathering you find yourself in.

Weight Watchers was awarded the distinction of being the #1 weight loss diet (although I do not like that word) in the U.S. by U.S. News & World Report.

Of course, best results come from a combination of healthy eating and effective exercise :)

EYB TV EPISODE “THANKSGIVING” FIT TIP INFO “DON’T GAIN WEIGHT DURING THE HOLIDAY”:

Hello everyone. Hope you are well. All week on Empower Your Body TV we focus on Thanksgiving and how NOT to gain weight :) Below is a summary of tips I gave. Want to watch the episode yourself? Just click www.youtube.com/empoweryourbody

1. Work out and eat well the week of Thanksgiving. You will eat much more on Thanksgiving, so allow your metabolism to be on fire for the day.

2. Eat lighter…are you cooking? Try using fat-free broth, less sugar and fat when preparing, also, use fat-free yogurt or sour cream in dips and mashed potatoes. All the foods will taste just great!

3. Limit the alcohol. There are 7kcal/gram for alcohol. Fat has 9kcal/g and carbs & proteins have 4kcal/g. That makes alcohol closer in caloric density to fats!!!

All in all, be careful, eat responsibly, work out that day &/or the following day and enjoy the holiday :)

EYB TV EPISODE “TAYLOR LAUTNERS WORKOUT” FIT TIP INFO:

Hi everyone. Women want him and men want to look like him…who am I speaking about? Taylor Lautner! Here are some tips he says he used when training to go from a skinny teenager to a buff hollywood star :)

1. Push your limits. Challenge yourself while being efficient with your energy & time. If you could lift 120lbs 12x, try 170lbs 4x. Please be careful. Also, try negatives….slow the weight during the eccentric contraction of the movement. (I show you exactly what I mean on this weeks episode).

2. Vary Volume. Studies indicate form The Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research that varying the number of reps and sets increases strength anywhere from 25-50%!!!!

3. Recovery. Rest is very important. Taylor never trained more than 5 days a week and rested every 3rd day. This allows your muscles to repair themselves.

EYB TV Episode “Halloween” Fit Tip Info:

Hello :) Hope you are all well. This weeks episode of Empower Your Body TV is all about Halloween and not allowing ourselves to gain candy weight! Want to watch it for yourself? Click www.youtube.com/empoweryourbody or simply read my “4 Tips for Keeping Halloween Candy off your Rear”:

1. Do not buy the type of candy that YOU like for the trick or treaters. You will eat it in between visitors…

2. Use the 3 day rule. After 3 days get rid of all the candy that is left behind.

3. Think about your waist and choose to donate the candy. Search “Operation Gratitude” and donate your candy to our troops overseas. On November 1st that is exactly what will be available for you.

4. Remember candy is always there! You do not need to stuff your face and belly with sugar laden foods on this one day.

This week let’s all commit to new discoveries! New discoveries about ourselves, about our bodies, our intentions, our goals, our “hidden voice” that guides us :) and let’s eat new foods (healthy of course) & new exercises.

Want to learn about proper serving size? Below is some info from the Food Guide Pyramid:

1. 1 serving from the bread group is 1 slice of bread, HALF a bagel or english muffin (not a whole one), 1 oz. cereal, HALF cup cooked cereal, pasta or rice.

2. 1 serving from the veggie group is 1 cup of raw, green leafy veggies, half cup cooked or chopped veggies, 3/4 cup of veggie juice.

3. 1 serving from the fruit group is 1 medium fruit, half cup mixed fruit, 3/4 cup of fruit juice.

4. 1 serving from the milk group is 1 cup milk yogurt or 1.5 oz. of cheese.

5. 1 serving from the meat group is 2-3 oz. of lean meat, poultry or fish (or the size of a deck of cards), half cup of beans, 1 egg, 2 tablespoons of peanut butter.

So, as you can see, a serving size is much smaller than we all may think. Hope you all discovered something new :)

EYB TV EPISODE ” CHILD HEALTH DAY “: FIT TIP INFO:

Since this week is Child Health Day, I decided to list many ways to improve our little ones health. Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years in America with about 1 in every 3 children overweight. This leaves them more at risk than ever for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, bone/joint issues, sleep apnea, high cholesterol & high blood pressure. 1. Include children with shopping, cooking & growing fruits and veggies.
2. Decrease their media time to 1-2 hrs a week. Most currently get 6-7 hrs. a week!
3. Work with local schools to limit foods/drinks with added sugar, fat & salt.
4. Increase fruit, veggie & water intake at home.
5. Children should get at least 60min/day of physical activity. Only 18% of schools grades 9-12 meet this requirement.

3 Tips For Recovery Nutrition:  (within 1 hour post exercise)

1. Replenish your fluids.  For every pound you lose while exercising, you need to drink 2-3 cups of water afterwards. 

2. Since carbs are the bodys primary fuel source, it is beneficial to replenish them.  Try some fruits or whole grains.

3. Proteins help to stimulate muscle repair, which it return increases your metabolism and your bodys ability to burn fat.  Try some peanut/almond butter or low-fat yogurt with fruit.

EYB TV EPISODE “LABOR DAY: PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM THE SUN” FIT TIP INFO:

5 Tips to Protect your Skin from the Sun:

1. Wear sunscreen please! Sun damage can occur in just 15 minutes in the sun.  Wear at least 30spf and reapply every 2 hours.

2. Avoid the sun during its strongest hours (usually 10am-3pm). That is when the UV rays are most powerful.

3. Cover up please. Use sunglasses, wide brim hats or stay under an umbrella in the shade. Also make sure your sunglasses protect against UVA & UVB rays.

4. Stay hydrated. It is important to keep your skin moist and hydrated so it retains its pliability.  Use warm , not hot, water when bathing and preferably for only 10 minutes (I know this doesn’t make for a relaxing bath :) and moisturize as soon as you get out.

5. Avoid tanning beds. They are worse than the sun.

According to Robert Eckel, a researcher from the University of Colorado:

1. 92% of Americans have heard of trans fat.

2. 73% of Americans know trans fat can increases the chance of heart disease.

3. 77% know saturated fat can increase the chance of heart disease.

4. 21% can name 3 foods that contain trans fat.

5. About half can not name 1!
